Reunion 1999: Class Notes from Scrib Messenger (May 1999)
After college, a tour in the Army, and four years in graduate school, since 1977 I’ve been living in Columbia, Maryland, and working for the U.S. Department of Defense as a civilian foreign language researcher. It’s tough to summarize the rest of the past 35 years in a few words, so here’s a current snapshot instead:
- Favorite book of last 6 months: Selling the Invisible, by Harry Beckwith
- Favorite magazine: Wired
- A favorite saying: Dreams are real while they last. Can we say more of life?
- Favorite outdoor activity: riding my recumbent road bike
- Favorite recent movies: Patch Adams; October Sky
- Myers-Briggs letters: ESTJ (off the scale on the J)
- One memorable event of the past 5 years: being selected out of the crowd to sing a solo at a Lettermen concert
- Things I’d like to know more about: reiki (the art of therapeutic touch); statistics; nutrition and health
- Issues of current interest: public education; the social impact of technology; capital punishment
- Things I wish I had known 35 years ago: the power of compound interest; how to take life seriously without taking life too seriously
- Greatest challenge and learning experience: raising two severely learning-disabled daughters, now ages 28 and 26
- Very best friend: Mary Jo (wife of almost 32 years and high school math teacher)
I’d really enjoy hearing what the rest of you all have been up to!
