Bio, 2014: Gary King
Some of my best memories of SHS were playing football under coach Harris especially when Stillwater beat McAlester to go to the State Championship our Senior year; Go Pioneers! I went on to OSU after graduation enjoying partying and fraternity life so much with Sigma Phi Epsilon my sophomore year, that I found myself spending the next four years in the US Air Force! I spent three years stationed in Hawaii, and then God got even with me and I was shipped to K.I Sawyer in the upper peninsula of Michigan. It was in February, and I went from 70 degrees and sand to -30 degrees and snow. After my tour of duty with Uncle Sam, I returned to OSU in 1970 where I met my wife, Patsy (a Pauls Valley native). We were married in 1971 and will celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary this coming August. I graduated from OSU in 1973 with a degree in Business Administration. My career in the trucking industry has spanned 41 years taking my family across the US and to Kalona, Iowa where Patsy and I currently live with our two cats! I’m still trucking and presently am the VP of Safety and Human Resources for Heartland Express out of Iowa City. We recently made an acquisition which doubled our size to some 4500 trucks and over 6000 employees, and our CEO tells me I can’t retire until we make it work. I still like working, and my wife says someone has to keep working to pay her health insurance! The trouble with living in Iowa City is I have to tolerate BIG 10 sports. Usually it is ok until wrestling season hits. I really wish we would have won Nationals this year.
We have two daughters, Kari and Kelli. Kari is an accountant for an Iowa Energy company in Humboldt, Iowa. She and her husband have four children. Kelli is a UI graduate and works in the organ donation department at the University of Iowa. She and her husband are the parents of two daughters. With six grandchildren, the grandparents are on the road a lot enjoying their events.
In my spare time, I like traveling around the country shooting sporting clay tournaments……this could become my second career after retirement! I enjoy photography and traveling, but after traveling overseas have decided there’s still more to see in the USA!
