Bio, 2014: Margo Gee Heaps
Having graduated in 1963 I appreciate being included with my fellow high school classmates.
College beckoned and I started at good old OSU (1summer and a year) and then wandered far afield for much of my college training. I attended universities in Idaho and Utah (2 different universities). It took 4 universities, 1 marriage, 2 children and 7 years for me to get my degree. What a saga!
Since then I worked as a substitute teacher in the Jr. and Sr. High Schools in Las Cruces, New Mexico where we spent 14 years. This gave me some insight into the world of our teens. It did prove embarrassing when I was called Mom or Sister Heaps (church association) by some of those I taught.
When mid life crisis hit I went back to school at New Mexico State University and picked up a Masters in Communication Studies. I can tell you when I hit the college classroom I found a home. I loved teaching at that level. Since then I have taught at New Mexico State University, Florida State University, Scottsdale Community College, Chandler-Gilbert Community College, Central Arizona College, and Northern Arizona University. Now lest you think I can’t hold a job, this was all part time adjunct faculty teaching. I even did some classes on television. That was really different!
When my husband, Mel, retired from teaching because of a hearing loss, I continued working until I decided he was having too much fun being retired, so I retired also. Since then we have tried to do some traveling. Our summers in the California Mountains to get away from the Arizona heat and the occasional cruise have been wonderful. Mexico, Alaska, the Mediterranean, the Panama Canal, the western Caribbean and across the Atlantic Ocean to tour part of Europe are places we have visited. We have been blessed to have the health and time to enjoy the beautiful world in which we live.
I have a few life accomplishments the give me joy and satisfaction for having done. . I have helped to raise two wonderful children into fine and productive adults. In past years I have done some backpacking with a church group, run the Gila River in New Mexico. I have begun to paint, I have written a little poetry, and I have written and directed short plays for our church I continue to be active in church and community. I love to read and help facilitate a community reading group. I love my silver sneakers classes. All in all I must say it has been a wonderful ride so far and I look forward to the future.
