Bio, 2014: Susan Gahn McMillen

I attended OSU, marrying Vic McMillen (Marilyn McMillen Dougall’s older brother) when he graduated from OTS in the Air Force in 1967. We’ve been married for 47 wonderful years and it’s been quite a joyful ride. We have three great children and two precious granddaughters who fortunately all live near us.

Vic’s last assignment was at the Space Command in Colorado Springs, where we decided to stay when he retired as a Colonel after 28 years in the Air Force. He then became a civilian contractor in satellite security and retired from that three years ago. We’ve lived throughout the States and in Germany during his AF career. We love traveling; we’ve been to quite a few places : explored Europe, have been inside the Great Pyramid and on the Great Wall; have been to little places such as Fanning Island and six islands in French Polynesia as well as the usual destinations such as Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii several times, Mexico, Alaska, Iceland, England and London numerous times, as well as many places in the States. We also like to cruise; have taken about 25. We like to go somewhere to explore on our own, and then cruise back to the States; have done that with Australia, Greece, Spain, and 5 times with England/London.

We have enjoyed spending time so much at our cabin in the CO mountains that we decided that since we weren’t getting any younger (!) we’d follow our dreams and have moved to 35 glorious acres shortly west of Woodland Park; is paradise; can’t see any nearby houses—just wildlife such as deer, elk, bears and even had the thrill of watching the birth of twin fawns right outside our window.

I’ve enjoyed reading all your bios and have such admiration for your career accomplishments. I took the other fork in the road and have been blessed to be a stay-at-home mother. We’ve always been very involved in our church wherever we have lived; extensive work with youth; mission trips (almost 20-most in the US or Mexico); I’ve held many positions in the church and have led a number of classes; led a women’s group for over 15 years. I enjoy reading, history, painting (oils), volunteer work, and am trying my hand at writing a novel although it will probably never see completion because I’m thoroughly immersed in the research.

I didn’t know many of you during high school, but in reading your bios, I’d love getting to know you better now and hear more about your interesting lives. Unfortunately we can’t make this reunion—maybe the next.
